Hello Boss (Brother of SIFORS), introduce me to Gusti Ayu Putu Setiari a.k.a Gunggek. I am an 18th batch of Information Systems student as well as being the first batch in this study program. This time I share tips as well as my experience in working on a thesis as a first generation who doesn't have a senior, who is confused about what topic to take, who doesn't even know what thesis to write. Previously, of course, we all knew that completing the thesis was a requirement so that we could graduate from this beloved campus and get a bachelor's degree. Fyi, the degree that you will get after graduating from SIFORS is a Bachelor of Computer Science (S.Kom). Of course, the journey to obtaining the title is not easy. There are many things that we have to go through and here I will share the story of how I was finally able to finish this study and graduate on time.
As the first batch, of course, my friends and I were confused. We don't have many thesis references in the Undiksha library that relate to the SI study program. In short, we have to work harder in figuring out what topics we can take to complete this lecture period. The solution is to read journals that relate to the IS study program from other campuses and discuss with the lecturers, whether the topic can be researched or not. Of course, the journey in determining the topic is not easy, the rejection of the title until the revision is certain. But how do we respond to this, take the positive side. Here are some tips that I can give based on my experience:
- Discussion is important
After you get a topic idea, start reading journals/articles/theses that are similar to your topic idea. The topic I took for this thesis is business process analysis. Coincidentally, because it was the first batch, there was no thesis on this topic in the Undiksha library. So I looked for journals related to this topic in another campus, namely Universitas Brawijaya. The process that I did after getting the topic, of course, began to make a topic submission form that contained the background, problem formulation, research objectives, previous studies, and a bibliography. Of all the contents, the most difficult to make a background. What actually motivated me to do this research? I was confused myself, until finally I had a discussion with Mr. Ardwi as the lecturer who oversees the business process analysis course and I started to get directions for my research. Finally I took the title of the thesis "Analysis of Business Process Data Management Achievement and Student Scholarship Using Business Process Improvement (BPI) (Case Study: Universitas Pendidikan Ganesha)". After getting the title, I was confused again, what should I do next?, Instead of being confused myself, I asked Ardwi again what should I do. He suggested conducting an interview with the Student Affairs Office at the Undiksha Rectorate to ask questions regarding the business process flow in managing student achievement and scholarship data and whether there are any obstacles in managing the data. Without thinking I immediately came to the Rectorate in hopes of getting an answer to my question, and yes I got that answer. I immediately proceeded to work on the topic submission form and finally my topic was approved by the ACC by the Study Program Coordinator.
The message I can convey to my friends from this first tip is that discussion is important. Don't let yourself be confused, when friends are stuck in working on a thesis, ask. Ask your lecturer or friends who are taking the same topic. The longer we think and get stuck, it makes the thesis never work on. So don't be shy about asking, BoS (Brother of SIFORS) - Just do it
The process of working on this thesis is quite long, starting from working on the topic submission form, proposal, proposal exam, proposal revision, data collection, working on the thesis, thesis trial, thesis revision, until finally the thesis at ACC and being able to register for graduation. From that long process, the essence of it all is actually "just do it". Of course we often hear "a good thesis is a finished thesis" is valid, and even more valid "a completed thesis begins with the thesis that is being worked on". The process of working on my thesis, of course, was not that smooth, I revised it many times and even got to the point where "gosh, this thesis has been completed and has only received so many revisions". What can you do, like it or not, you have to do it. Complaining for sure but coming back again, if you don't do it, it won't be finished.
"Ahh gas jak, just do it" is one sentence that I often say to myself. If it gives a little enthusiasm to yourself in completing quite a lot of revisions and thesis. In addition to the revision that was done, writing and pouring sentences in the thesis became a pretty heavy thing. Not to mention that we have to paraphrase every quote we quote to include the research results in chapter 4 of the thesis, it's really difficult. Back again "just do it", it doesn't feel really, you know it's just finished. - Pray and try
When we start to lose motivation, enthusiasm, and feel like giving up, pray for a solution. I have proven this. One time when I was under pressure, when a friend who was always with me suddenly had a thesis trial, there I experienced anxiety. Plus graduation registration is only a few days away, making me unsure of myself. Then how do I get out of this pressure? Yep pray and try. Those two things are a solid package that can free me from this under pressure. Friends, you have to believe in yourself, that we can do it, we definitely can. Every effort we have made, plus chanting prayers, surely the miracle will come.
Of the three tips, slowly I do. I discussed this confusing thesis with my supervisor and friends who took the same topic as me. Thesis that requires a lot of thought power to write it I just do it. Until when I was under pressure, I prayed that it would be easy and of course I would try. Finally I was able to finish my thesis and graduate on time. It's good and sad, of course. From this thesis I learned to be patient, sincere, and train my brain to think of solutions to every problem we face while working on this thesis.
For SIFORS friends who are and will enter their thesis period, just live it, everything will surely pass. Keep the spirit and believe in yourself that we can do it π
